BlackBerry App World crosses the 10,000 app mark

It’s been over a year since it hit 2,000 apps, but it looks like BlackBerry App World has finally hit its biggest milestone yet — RIM has announced via Twitter that it’s now “10,000 apps strong and growing.” For those keeping track, that still leaves it well behind Apple’s App Store and the Android Market, which by some estimates boast roughly 250,000 and 70,000 to 100,000 apps, respectively, and each of which also took less time to hit the 10,000 app mark. Even still, the fact that a smartphone platform “only” has 10,000 apps speaks quite a bit to how far we’ve come in just a few short years.

iTunes Store: applications to overtake songs in number of downloads this year

Aysmco is reporting that iOS application downloads on Apple’s iTunes store should overtake the number of song downloads sometime this year. The report is based on figures from the recent September 1 update to the iTunes Music Store and the iTunes Application Store. Asymco writes, “the App store has reached the same total downloads in 2.2 years as the iTMS reached after five years. The two curves are likely to be the same height (around 13 billion each) before the year is over.” Anyone surprised by the findings?

Free M.I.A. Show In NYC Still Happening!

When and where, we don’t know, but it is happening!
Fans of M.I.A. have been waiting patitently for her to get her ass back to the Big Apple after her gig at the HARD festival went terribly awry! The rapper had promised that the next time she was in town, she would put on a free show for all her dedicated fans, but still, nothing has been planned yet.
There were some kerfuffles about M.I.A. putting on a ticketed show towards the end of the month and that put fans in a tizy, but a source deep in her camp says that the show is still in the works and will be happening. According to the insider:
“They are working on details, place, and date, so I don’t have info on it yet. Stay tuned.”
There you go then. Stay tuned! Hopefully, she won’t make you wait too much longer!

iOS 4.1 bootrom exploit found, new jailbreak method on the way

Almost in unison with Apple releasing iOS 4.1, iOS tinkerer pod2g announced a bootrom exploit that will allow the jailbreaking community access to the innards of the California company’s mobile operating system. The exploit will eventually facilitate the next wave of iDevice jailbreaking, and isn’t something that can be plugged with a simple software update; Apple would have to flash a new bootrom to iPhones, etc. before they leave the factory. The iPhone Dev-Team is cautioning that all users steer clear of iOS 4.1 for the time being, but know that they — and others — are on the case.

Quo’s latest Mac clone to feature Asetek liquid cooling, Core i7

We just got off the phone with Quo Computers founder Rashantha De Silva. Remember him? Last spring, amidst all the hoopla surrounding Psystar and Apple, he announced the opening of a walk-in Mac clone shop in The Golden State. Since then, Psystar may have bitten the dust, but it looks like De Silva and co. are still in business… for now, anyway. Their newest (they haven’t even had time to update the website), the Quo maxQ2, will feature an Intel Core i7 3.6GHz CPU, 12GB of RAM, a 240GB SSD, a 1TB HDD, and an Adobe Mercury Playback Engine-compatible NVIDIA 285 GTX GPU. In addition, this bad boy will come equipped with an Asetek liquid / copper cold plate cooling system, and believe it or not, it’ll run OS X, Linux and Windows 7. Prices start at $3,765, and it should go on sale starting September 15. For about 18 minutes, or an hour and 18 minutes if Apple’s lawyer crew just so happens to be at lunch.
